Karpowership seeks contract extension amid rising power demand

Karpowership Ghana is pushing for an extension of its power generation agreement past August 2027, when its present licence ends. The company says it continues to provide 450 megawatts to the national grid and remains confident that its role in keeping Ghana's lights on will support a favourable outcome in talks with the government.

The renewed focus came to light during a visit by Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson to the Karpowership facility in Sekondi-Takoradi on September 29, 2026. The minister used the tour to observe how the company contributes to the country's electricity supply. Sandra Amarquaye, the firm's Corporate Communications Manager, affirmed that negotiations are ongoing and that Karpowership is hopeful its impact will be recognised as discussions progress.

The government has previously depended on Karpowership for about 23 percent of its power, though that share has slipped to 11 percent following the entry of other Independent Power Producers. Minister Joseph Nelson explained that rising demand is driving President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's push for a 24-hour economy, which he believes will boost industrial activity and further increase power needs. The Ministry of Energy leads decisions on contract extensions, but the minister stressed that Karpowership's contribution must remain part of the conversation.

At this stage, no final decision has been reached, and talks are expected to continue as officials assess supply gaps and the future of Ghana's energy mix.
