Speaker Alban Bagbin's drug inquiry motion dismissed, Minister Pelpuo backs the decision

Dr Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, Minister of State at the Presidency, says Speaker Alban Bagbin acted rightly in dismissing a Minority motion that sought a parliamentary inquiry into the recent narcotics seizures reported in Ghana. The Speaker ruled the motion inadmissible on September 29, stating that any further inquiry would duplicate work already underway by security agencies and the courts. In an interview on JoyNews' The Pulse the following day, Dr Pelpuo explained that Parliament's primary responsibility is lawmaking, and it should not intervene in investigations that directly affect the judiciary.
He emphasized that such matters can be examined after the judicial process concludes and that MPs could later invite the relevant minister to present findings. According to Dr Pelpuo, Ghana must tighten loopholes that allow illicit drug transit and trafficking to continue unchecked. The debate underscores rising concern over the country's role in the international drug trade and the need for coordinated responses across government, security forces, and the judiciary.
