ICU Urges GHABA Members to Build Sustainable Hairdressing Enterprises

The General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union, Morgan Ayawine, has called on members of the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association, GHABA, to turn their hairdressing and beauty skills into sustainable enterprises.

Speaking at the opening of the GHABA Hair Festival 2026 at the University of Ghana in Accra on Tuesday, September 29, Ayawine, represented by his Deputy General Secretary for Operations, Emmanuel Benimah, said the industry must evolve beyond just offering services to building economic ventures. He described the festival’s theme – “Transforming the Beauty Industry Through Skills, Creativity, and Enterprise Development” – as timely and relevant for practitioners seeking financial independence.

Ayawine urged stylists and beauticians to move beyond client work and create businesses that generate income and employment. He emphasized that success requires faith, planning, discipline, and honesty, and encouraged participants not to wait for large capital. Instead, he advised starting small with modest spaces like kiosks or containers and gradually expanding as operations grow.

The ICU leader also highlighted the importance of ethical entrepreneurship, urging practitioners to avoid shortcuts and dubious means. He stressed that with commitment and integrity, hairdressers can build lasting enterprises that empower both themselves and the youth.
