New life for Accra-Kumasi bypasses as contractors resume work

The Ghanaian government has re‑started work on the Accra‑Kumasi corridor bypasses after contractors returned to the sites. Minister for Roads and Highways Kwame Agbodza, who inspected the sections, reaffirmed the administration’s promise to have all bypasses finished by the end of 2027, describing the project as a top national priority. He told the crew that the government will see the work through to completion, just as it has done with other priority programmes.

The projects are moving ahead with measurable progress on each stretch. The Osino southbound leg is about 77 % done, while the northbound side stands at 70 %. At Anyinam the southern section is 74.6 % complete and the northern side nearly finished at 99 %. Enyiresi is about 65 % (south) and 64 % (north), and Konogo shows 74 % (south) and 60 % (north) progress. Overall, the bypasses are intended to add lane capacity and ease the chronic congestion that plagues the Accra‑Kumasi highway.

In parallel, rehabilitation of the existing Accra‑Kumasi Highway continues. Contractors are carrying out sectional maintenance on heavily worn sections before a full asphalt overlay will be applied across the entire corridor. The upgrade aims to improve ride quality while the bypasses are being built.

Motorists have been warned to be patient and cautious. Agbodza urged drivers to avoid speeding and reckless manoeuvres, stressing that careless behaviour can lead to crashes and loss of life. He appealed for calm as both construction and rehabilitation work proceed.

The next step will be to keep the public updated on milestones as each bypass reaches completion and to coordinate the rollout of the highway overlay once the maintenance phase ends.
