Unemployed nurses urged to embrace entrepreneurship while waiting for postings
Retired chief nursing officer urges qualified nurses to start businesses to beat rising unemployment
Mrs. Annabella Agyemang Aboagye, Retired Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer of the Ghana Adventist Health Service, has called on unemployed nurses and midwives to stop staying idle and instead leverage their certification to venture into entrepreneurship.
Speaking at her retirement ceremony organised by the Ghana Adventist Health Service (GAHS) at SDA Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Kwadaso, she explained that the country's healthcare sector is grappling with over 74,000 qualified but unposted health professionals, with projections suggesting this could climb to 180,000 by 2028 if not addressed.
According to her, stable income from nursing jobs alone may not be enough for many families given current cost-of-living pressures, urging graduates to develop additional income streams that can become sustainable even after eventual appointment.
The former GAHS leadership also encouraged those currently practising to uphold professionalism and compassion in their work, noting that while nursing can be demanding, diligent service brings both blessings and societal impact.
