Bekwai MP pledges to engage stakeholders to help street‑side traders after market redevelopment
The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Ralph Poku‑Adusei, has promised to discuss the plight of traders who have been moved by the redevelopment of the Bekwai Central Market with the Assembly. He signalled this after meeting affected vendors and women’s groups who warned about the dangers of trading on the roadside when school resumes.
During his visit he learned that some merchants are now selling on the stretches of road that connect the market to the lorry station. The exposure to sun, rain and passing traffic places them at risk and the MP saw how hard it is for many of these women who support households.
The MP says the drive to modernise the market must not trample the livelihoods of those who rely on it. He wants the Municipal Chief Executive, the Municipal Coordinating Director, the Municipal Engineer and other key officials to work on two fronts.
The first front will secure safe temporary spaces for the displaced traders while the second will speed up the building of the new stalls. He said he will press for temporary shelters such as umbrellas until the new structures are ready. He stressed that modernisation should protect the dignity and welfare of market people.
The MP did not name a new opening date for the redevelopment, but he assured that he will keep pushing for a solution that safeguards the traders now.
