Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has condemned the arrest of critics by the Mahama administration, urging the NPP to hold government accountable without fear.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has condemned the arrest of critics by the Mahama administration, stating that persons are jailed for saying things the government does not like. He made this known during the NPP conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2023. Afenyo-Markin recounted that members of the NDC had previously made worse remarks about the Akufo-Addo administration without facing arrest, and he argued that the Mahama government must adopt the same tolerance. He urged the NPP and the Minority to boldly hold the government accountable without fear of intimidation or arrest. The Minority, he said, would never be intimidated in parliament and would fight until power is regained in 2028. He emphasized that the NPP owes a duty to the nation to demand accountability through democratic means. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor echoed similar sentiments, stating that Ghana needs the NPP to lead the country to prosperity and transformation. He called for careful selection of party leaders who can restore public confidence. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also expressed confidence that the NPP would win the 2028 elections with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer, with God's guidance. The NPP National Delegates Conference, held at Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, brought together party members to elect new national executives and adopt constitutional amendments. Delegates voted to shape the party's leadership ahead of the 2028 elections. The event featured emotional moments, including chants of 'The Lord is with us, come 2028, we shall prevail.' The party also reported a surge in sales of NPP paraphernalia in Kumasi. Afenyo-Markin stressed that the NPP must unite to support Bawumia and secure victory in 2028. The conference, which drew criticism from some NDC representatives who boycotted it over a late start, highlighted the party's resolve to reclaim power. The NPP's constitutional amendments, proposed by the Amendment Committee, aim to strengthen its organizational structure. The party remains focused on regaining public trust and achieving its developmental agenda.
