Accra High Court Hands EOCO Arrest Warrant for Manhyia South MP

An Accra High Court has issued a warrant that empowers the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to arrest Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South. The court acted after EOCO’s legal team argued that the legislator had repeatedly ignored invitations and that vital documents might be hidden or destroyed. This step came just a week after officers tried to take the MP into custody at the Accra High Court on September 23, a move that sparked a heated scuffle.

Manhyia South MP Baffour Awuah has been at the centre of a probe into the operations of SIC Life Savings and Loans, a client of his former law firm, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners. He says the investigation stems from a financial arrangement his firm handled for SIC, which eventually led to a settlement worth roughly GH¢14 million after a claim of about GH¢3.5 million. While EOCO insists it needs the arrest and a search to protect evidence, the MP argues that his firm already represented the interests of the parties involved and that investigators have already received statements from his former colleagues.

The warrant now gives EOCO the legal green light to move forward with the arrest and any document seizure it deems necessary. As the case unfolds, Ghanaians will be watching closely to see how the matter impacts public perception of accountability among public officials and how it may affect ongoing financial oversight of savings and loans institutions in the country.
