Vice President Calls for Equal Digital Opportunities for Girls in Ghana

Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has emphasized that Ghana’s digital future must include equal opportunities for girls and young women. Speaking at the graduation of the fifth cohort of the Heritage and Cultural Society of Africa (HACSA) Tech4Girls programme in Accra on September 29, 2023, she highlighted the growing importance of digital skills across education, employment, and business. The event, which celebrated HACSA’s 10th anniversary, saw 80 young women graduate after completing training in coding, artificial intelligence, digital literacy, and cybersecurity. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that initiatives like Tech4Girls are equipping girls with the tools to thrive in a technology-driven economy. She stressed that such programmes support broader national efforts, including collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service to expand foundational digital training. The Vice President also referenced the Girls in ICT programme, which introduces girls to coding, animation, and computing, and announced a new partnership with Huawei to train 3,000 girls in artificial intelligence under this initiative. This partnership is linked to the government’s One Million Coders programme, aiming to build technical capacity among youth. According to the Vice President, a nation’s progress is only sustainable if women are given equal opportunities in all sectors, including technology. She called on Ghanaians to continue supporting policies and programmes that promote gender equity in the digital space. The graduation ceremony served not only as a celebration of achievement but also as a call to action for stakeholders to deepen investments in girls’ education and digital empowerment.
