UER Guard Hostage Crisis at Gbane Mines

Two security guards of Earl International Group were taken hostage underground at Gbane in the Upper East Region by suspected illegal miners on September 30, 2026.
Two security personnel assigned to Earl International Group’s operations in the Upper East Region were seized deep within the Gbane mining site on September 30, 2026. Local reports indicate they were held captive by individuals engaged in unauthorised extraction activities. Community leaders confirmed the hostages are currently unharmed but remain in the custody of the unauthorized miners.
This incident marks the latest flashpoint in the long-running crackdown on illegal mining in Ghana’s northern corridor. The Upper East Region has seen repeated confrontations between state security forces and informal extraction networks, often centered around sites like Gbane where gold is abundant but regulated. Such actions undermine national efforts to formalise the sector and protect both personnel and the environment.
The Ghana Minerals Commission and the Ghana Police Service have not yet released an official statement on the situation. However, regional security units have been activated to assist in any potential rescue or negotiation efforts. There are growing concerns that such incidents may deter investment if not addressed swiftly and decisively.
