Germany commits $50 million for a dedicated skills development university in Ghana, part of a $132 million package allocating $82 million for youth workplace training.

Ghana will construct a pioneering skills development university using a $50 million allocation from a German-funded $132 million support package. Minister of State at the Presidency Dr Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo announced this initiative, emphasizing the institution's focus on practical training to close the gap between skills acquisition and employment. The university, Ghana's first of its kind, will be built specifically to equip young people with industry-relevant competencies demanded by the job market.

The German contribution extends beyond infrastructure, with $82 million earmarked for a workplace placement program targeting skilled youth. Trainees will receive monthly financial support during company attachments, reducing employer costs while allowing hands-on experience. Companies gaining value from trainees may absorb them permanently, while others gain enhanced expertise to launch independent ventures. This model directly addresses youth unemployment by connecting technical training to real workplace integration.

The initiative forms part of a broader German-Ghanaan collaboration to expand technical and vocational opportunities. It prioritizes practical outcomes over theoretical education, ensuring graduates possess immediately applicable skills. The program reflects growing recognition of technical education's critical role in national development across West Africa.

Construction of the university begins immediately with German technical support, though no specific completion date was provided. The placement program will commence upon institutional setup, with trainee recruitment starting in the coming months.
