NPP Chairmanship: Asante Urges Boakye Agyarko's Election

Political scientist Asante argues former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko is ideal NPP chair for the party's current disarray.
A political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah Asante, has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) requires former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko as its national chairman ahead of the party's internal elections. Asante described Agyarko as disciplined, firm and focused, qualities he believes are essential for the party's present challenges. He emphasized that the NPP needs a leader who can provide direction rather than merely seeking power or popular acclaim.
Executive Director of Global InforAnalytics, Mussah Dankwah, countered that Agyarko's campaign remarks during the flagbearer contest have created complications. Dankwah noted that Agyarko's strained relationship with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo could hinder his effectiveness if elected chairman. He questioned how Agyarko would manage relations with the senior party figure if he assumes the chairmanship role.
The NPP will conduct its National Delegates Congress at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026, to elect national executives. A total of 7,163 delegates from across Ghana are expected to participate in the congress, which will also address constitutional amendments and oversee officer elections. The Ashanti Region leads in delegate numbers with 1,122, followed by Greater Accra (773) and Eastern (732). The Savannah Region has the fewest delegates at 184.
Voting will cover specific party positions, with 2,745 delegates casting ballots for the Youth Organiser, 1,275 for the Women's Organiser and 858 for the NASARA Organiser. The congress forms part of the NPP's preparations for the 2028 general elections. Party sources indicated that the election of national executives will be the central focus of the event.
