IMANI Africa Vice President Kofi Bentil says the Manhyia South MP should be released on self-bail while investigations continue.

Vice President of IMANI Africa Kofi Bentil has called for the Manhyia South MP, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, to be granted self-recognisance bail. He argues that the MP can submit himself to the investigative process without remaining in custody. Bentil says this would allow the case to proceed while safeguarding the MP’s rights.

Baffour Awuah voluntarily presented himself to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on October 1 after a High Court issued a warrant for his arrest and related searches. EOCO has confirmed that he is cooperating with investigators. The ongoing inquiry concerns alleged financial loss at SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering and tax-related matters.

During a media discussion, Bentil expressed doubt about reports that a Ghc50 million bail had been discussed. He said the figure was not confirmed and that the available information was unclear. Host Samson Lardy raised the bail amount, prompting Bentil to state that he had seen references to it but did not have verification.

Bentil stressed that he does not shield anyone from prosecution if evidence of wrongdoing emerges. However, he maintains that a credible and fair process is essential. He warned that a perceived unfair procedure could erode public confidence in the justice system.

According to Bentil, granting self-recognisance bail would enable the investigation to continue while respecting legal safeguards. He believes this approach balances the need for accountability with the rights of the accused.

The call for self-bail comes amid broader debate over the handling of the MP’s detention. Bentil previously compared the case to that of Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, suggesting political dimensions to the scrutiny. He has also referenced other high-profile investigations to underscore the importance of consistent standards.
