NPA CEO assures tanker drivers of action on welfare concerns
CEO Godwin Tameklo pledges to resolve tanker drivers' welfare issues after emergency meeting.
National Petroleum Authority (NPA) Managing Director Godwin Kudzo Tameklo has promised concrete steps to improve working conditions for tanker drivers in Ghana.
The assurance came during an emergency meeting with the Ghana National Petroleum Tankers Drivers Union (GNPTDU) on Wednesday, September 30, 2023. The union had staged a strike earlier that week, citing the poor condition of the Tema Oil Refinery‑Kpone Road and the deteriorating BOST yard where trucks are parked. Drivers also complained about oil loss control and delayed allowance payments for long hauls.
In response, Mr Tameklo said the NPA will investigate the raised concerns and collaborate with relevant agencies to implement practical solutions that enhance safety and welfare for the drivers.
GNPTDU National Chairman George Nyaunu apologized for not informing the NPA before the industrial action and thanked the CEO for engaging directly with the drivers. He expressed optimism that the agreed interventions will address the immediate challenges facing the union members.
The NPA has indicated that a follow‑up review will be conducted within the next month to verify progress on the promised actions, after which the union has agreed to keep the current suspension of strike activity in place.
