NHIA Launches School Quiz To Raise NHIS Knowledge Across Ghana
National Health Insurance Authority begins inter-school quiz and sensitisation drive in 48 schools, targeting greater NHIS literacy among students.
The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has introduced a new inter-school quiz competition and a nationwide sensitisation exercise for Senior High School students across Ghana. The programme was officially opened on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Kintampo Senior High School in the Bono East Region. Officials say the effort is meant to deepen students’ understanding of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and to create a new generation of health‑aware advocates.
The move follows a directive from the NHIA’s Corporate Affairs Directorate, working hand‑in‑hand with the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service, under the umbrella of the School Health Education Programme. Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, the CEO of NHIA, explained that the quiz is designed to give young people practical knowledge of NHIS policies, the services it offers, digital access points, and the duties of contributors. He also highlighted that participants will learn about coverage, primary health care, exemption criteria and who qualifies for state‑funded benefits.
Oswald Essuah‑Mensah, Director of Corporate Affairs at NHIA, noted that three schools from each of the fifteen regions will compete, bringing the total to 48 institutions. The competition is meant to blend learning, interaction and healthy rivalry, giving students a clearer picture of how the NHIS operates on a day‑to‑day basis. The accompanying sensitisation campaign will travel to selected schools in every region, reinforcing the same messages about health responsibilities and community benefits.
The NHIA hopes the exercise will not only sharpen students’ knowledge but also inspire them to share what they have learned with families and neighbourhoods. By doing so, the Authority expects to boost overall NHIS awareness and literacy across the country. Officials say the first round will be followed by further stages that will see schools from different regions battling it out for the ultimate title.
With the programme now in motion, the next step is a series of regional contests that will culminate in a national final later in the year. Stakeholders are eager to see how the initiative will impact health education in Ghana’s schools.
