District residents bring dogs for free anti‑rabies shots as part of regional health drive

The Atwima Nwabiagya North District marked World Rabies Day by launching a free anti‑rabies vaccination exercise for dogs and other eligible animals. The one‑day event, held at the district’s central veterinary clinic, aimed to curb the spread of rabies among both domestic and wild animals.

District Health Officer Dr. Kwame Asare explained that the initiative was part of a broader regional campaign to protect public health and reduce animal bite incidents. He urged pet owners to take advantage of the complimentary service, noting that vaccination was the most effective way to prevent the disease.

Local volunteers and veterinary staff worked side‑by‑side to administer the shots, with lines of residents forming early in the morning. Community members expressed relief at the free service, citing the high cost of private veterinary care as a barrier to regular animal health check‑ups.

The exercise also included educational talks on rabies prevention, proper animal handling, and the importance of reporting stray animals to authorities. Officials from the Ghana Health Service reiterated their commitment to expanding such outreach programmes across the country.
