Accra orders shops and markets close 6am-noon for Sanitation Day
AMAs closure for Accra shops and markets on Oct 3 clean-up day.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has ordered all shops, markets and commercial outlets in Accra to shut from 6 am to 12 noon on Saturday, October 3, 2026, to take part in the National Sanitation Day exercise. This directive is part of the national clean‑up event that commemorates the 2026 World Cleanup Day and forms a key component of the government's Clean Up Ghana Agenda. The closure will give residents, traders, transport operators and corporate bodies the chance to join desilting, sweeping, refuse collection and cleaning of streets, drains and public spaces across the capital. A public notice was issued on September 30 and signed by AMA's Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, on behalf of the Metropolitan Chief Executive. The national event will be led by Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Mahama Ayariga and will be held under the theme "National Sanitation Day: Local Actions Yielding National Impact".
The exercise will be coordinated through AMA's three sub‑metropolitan areas, focusing on selected markets such as London Market and Rawlings Park in Ashiedu Keteke, Tuesday Market and Camara in Ablekuma South, and Circle Neoplian in Okaikoi South. Activities at these sites will include drain desilting, general cleaning and refuse removal. The AMA calls on all traders, residents and civic groups to participate and help clear waste from busy commercial zones, reinforcing collective responsibility for a cleaner environment in Ghana's capital.
