FoSCel submits comic resources to integrate sickle cell education into Ghanaian schools
Focus on Sickle Cell Foundation pushes for comic-based sickle cell lessons in basic and second cycle schools nationwide.
The Focus on Sickle Cell Foundation (FoSCel) has formally sent a collection of educational comic strips on Sickle Cell Disease to the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) for review. The strips are aimed at Basic, Junior High and Senior High School learners and are part of a wider plan to make Sickle Cell Disease a regular topic in the national curriculum. By using simple drawings and stories that connect with young people, the foundation hopes to turn complex medical facts into something that can be easily understood and discussed in class.
Before the formal submission, FoSCel tested the comics in a handful of schools in the Effutu Municipality. Feedback from those pilot sessions showed that students paid more attention during lessons and were more willing to ask questions about the condition. Teachers also noted that the materials helped clear up common myths and gave pupils a clearer picture of how the disease is inherited.
The successful pilot has strengthened the foundation’s confidence that comic‑based teaching can play a big role in health education across the country. With NaCCA now reviewing the proposal, the next step will be to see if the council approves the inclusion of these resources in classrooms. If approved, the comics could become a regular feature in schools, helping to raise awareness and reduce the stigma that often surrounds Sickle Cell Disease in Ghana.
