Vincent Assafuah slams GFA, says its existence brought shame to Ghana football

The Member of Parliament for Karak Edubiase, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has levelled a stinging accusation at the Ghana Football Association, claiming that its very existence has done little to uplift the sport in the country and has instead brought shame to Ghana football. He made these remarks as the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports, during a vetting session for the GFA’s proposed restructuring plans. According to him, the association has failed to deliver meaningful development, especially at the grassroots level, and its operations have been marred by controversy and mismanagement.

Assafuah’s criticism follows years of public frustration over the state of Ghana’s football, from the chronic underfunding of regional centres of excellence to the repeated scandals that have plagued the GFA. Many Ghanaians have called for sweeping reforms, and his comments reflect a growing impatience with the slow pace of progress. While he did not single out any individual, his stance underscores the mounting pressure on the association to be more accountable and result‑oriented.

The final report from the committee is expected within 45 days, but its content will be made public afterwards.

Opposition MPs have already urged the Interior Minister to intervene in the GFA crisis, adding political weight to calls for a complete overhaul.
