Unemployed Nurses Urged to Embrace Entrepreneurship Amid Growing Health Worker Backlog

Retired Chief Nursing Officer Annabella Agyemang Aboagye has urged unemployed nurses and midwives to pursue entrepreneurship to sustain livelihoods while awaiting government postings amid a critical health workforce shortage in Ghana.
She stressed that nursing demands sacrifice and rewards blessings when practiced with integrity and compassion.
During her retirement ceremony at the SDA Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Kwadaso, Mrs. Agyemang Aboagye highlighted the urgency for newly qualified nurses to seek alternative income streams rather than remain idle.
The retired official warned that Ghana’s current backlog of 74,000 unemployed health professionals could swell to 180,000 by 2028 without targeted interventions to absorb qualified graduates.
Advising young nurses to venture into sustainable ventures, she emphasized that reliance on nursing alone may not meet present economic realities.
The event also featured a call from Ghana Adventist Health Services Director Dr. James Antwi for a dedicated advisory body to support committed retirees in the health sector.
