TUTAG demands government honour unpaid post-retirement benefits for teachers

Teachers in Ghana's Senior High Schools have launched indefinite strike action over delayed payments for post-service contracts approved since 2012.
Strapped with financial strain, thousands of retired Senior High School teachers walked off the job from Tuesday morning after the Teacher Union of Ghana (TUTAG) declared an indefinite strike. TUTAG President David аэрnyang Fulɔ Fie echoed the union's core demand, stating the Ministry of Education's failure to process outstanding payments for post-retirement contracts, which have remained unpaid for over a decade, violates the Teaching Service Council's mandate to protect teacher welfare. This industrial action stems directly from the union's public protest reported on August 14, 2026, in Accra, where they highlighted irregular deductions and urged the National Labour Commission (NLC) to intervene before September 18th for payment by month's end. The delay affects educators who qualify for contractual roles beyond standard retirement age, distinct from permanent pension schemes, leaving many relying on unstable stipends. Without immediate resolution, TUTAG warns this disclosure will deepen financial insecurity among a vulnerable teaching cohort expected to return to classrooms nationwide by Wednesday July 17, 2026.
