He had built a reputation linked to political connections and government deals.

A Zimbabwean helicopter crash in Mashonaland East claimed the lives of prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife Lucy Muteke last Wednesday. The wreck occurred near Kudenga Farm in Marondera rural areas, some 70km east of Harare, killing all six aboard within minutes of take‑off. Police confirmed the incident at 17:00 local time and said investigations were already underway as officials recovered the aircraft’s black box.

Chivayo, known for flashy lifestyle choices and close ties to several African heads of state, had previously faced scrutiny over government contracts. His company secured multiple state‑linked deals that raised public questions, though he always denied wrongdoing. The tragedy has plunged his family and business associates into grief, with spokesperson Herbert Chivayo describing the loss as devastating.

Transport Minister Felix Mhona led a team of aviation officials to the crash site on Thursday, where emergency crews confirmed there were no survivors. Early speculation points to fuel leakage as a possible factor, though the exact cause remains undetermined. Authorities said the crash involved two pilots, three additional passengers and Chivayo’s wife, all of whom boarded the flight after departing from Gandami in Chikomba.

The incident underscores the risks associated with private aviation in the region and will likely prompt renewed calls for stricter safety oversight. No scheduled Ghanaian events are tied to this story.
