Suame Methodist JHS celebrates 120 years with renewed push for STEM resources and community partnership

Suame Methodist Junior High School in Kumasi marked its 120th anniversary on September 25, 2026, urging stakeholders to address critical gaps in its Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) infrastructure.

Head Teacher Mr. George Tiako revealed that despite the school’s ample space and facilities, only two outdated computers were available when he assumed leadership, describing the situation as inadequate for modern STEM education. He noted that old students had already donated 20 desks and 40 chairs, and a supporter contributed GH¢10,000 alongside two new computers, but emphasized that full equipment remains a pressing need.

The anniversary, themed "120 Years of Quality Education: Sustaining the Legacy Through Innovation, Excellence and Godly Values," highlighted the school’s legacy of producing influential Ghanaians including former Prime Minister Professor Kofi Abrefa Busia, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempreh, and highlife icon Daddy Lumba.

Methodist Church leaders, including Bishop Jeremiah Morison, stressed that academic excellence must be paired with moral development, urging parents to engage actively in PTA activities to support their children’s holistic growth.

Suame Municipal Education Director Mr. Clinton Henaka Budu affirmed the school’s role in shaping Ghana’s future leaders and called for collective action to improve infrastructure, particularly STEM facilities, while acknowledging government support is essential for larger projects.

Old student Isham Alhassan donated GH¢5,000 toward renovations and pledged to mobilize further support from prominent alumni, including Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, to address the school’s deteriorating physical conditions.

The event also featured announcements of additional donations, including two computers from Chairman Evangelist Michael Adu Poku, reinforcing the community’s commitment to revitalizing the school’s educational mission.

With ongoing appeals from school leadership and stakeholders, Suame Methodist JHS aims to transform its STEM capabilities to fulfill its vision of becoming a regional education hub while preserving its legacy of academic and moral excellence.
