Dean Subramanian to lead discussions on gold refining, responsible sourcing and Africa’s mining future at Accra forum

The African Minerals Policy Forum – Mining in Motion 2026 will hold in Accra from October 19 to 21, 2026.

Rand Refinery Chief Executive Officer Dean Subramanian has confirmed his participation in the forum’s high-level panel on gold refining and responsible sourcing.

His session, themed “Capturing More Value from Africa’s Gold: Refining, Responsible Purchasing and Global Market Access,” will explore how African nations can build stronger in-country refining capacity and responsible supply chains.

Subramanian brings over a century of refining experience to the discussion, drawing on Rand Refinery’s long-standing role in the continent’s gold ecosystem.

He will highlight the company’s technical support to Ghana’s Gold Coast Refinery as a model for regional capacity building.

The collaboration includes skills transfer in refining, analysis and sampling, aimed at strengthening local capabilities across the gold value chain.

Subramanian emphasized that Africa’s gold potential must be measured not just by output, but by its ability to process and monetize the resource responsibly.

Key pillars he will address include reliable feedstock, technical expertise, security, logistics, access to finance and governance frameworks.

He also called for pragmatic integration of artisanal and small-scale mining into formal, traceable supply systems.

Responsible sourcing, he argued, should enable formalisation rather than merely enforce compliance for small-scale producers.

Regulatory certainty, he noted, remains critical despite gold’s global market dynamics, with licensing and export controls falling under national jurisdiction.

The forum will bring together governments, producers, refiners, financial institutions and international market players.

Stakeholders are expected to discuss practical steps toward stronger regional cooperation and expanded access to global markets.

Subramanian stressed that Africa does not need to replicate every stage of the gold value chain locally, but rather build complementary capabilities and deeper regional linkages.

His central message ahead of AMPF–MiM 2026 is that long-term value creation depends on sustainable, credible and interconnected gold ecosystems.

The event offers a platform for advancing Africa’s role in the global gold trade through innovation, transparency and technical excellence.
