President Mahama to launch National Housing Finance Conference

President John Dramani Mahama is set to serve as Guest of Honour at the inauguration of the National Conference on Housing Finance slated for 7 October. The opening ceremony will feature his keynote address, underscoring the government's renewed focus on expanding affordable mortgage solutions for Ghanaians.

Housing finance has long been a critical barrier for many urban and rural Ghanaians seeking homeownership, particularly amid rising property prices in Accra, Kumasi and other growth centres. Past initiatives, such as the National Mortgage Scheme, have struggled with limited funding and bureaucratic hurdles, leaving millions without access to credit. Stakeholders from banks, real estate developers and civil society view this conference as a timely platform to chart a more inclusive financial roadmap.

The conference, convened by the Ministry of Works and Housing in partnership with the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Mortgage Finance Limited, will run for three days and delve into topics like mobile mortgage platforms, diaspora investment schemes and policy reforms. It aims to catalyse actionable strategies that lower entry costs for first-time buyers and stimulate private sector participation.

Participants can anticipate follow-up workshops and the release of a framework document next month, which is expected to guide state-led pilot projects by year-end. If sustained momentum builds, ordinary households could observe tangible shifts in loan accessibility and interest rates within the next financial cycle.
