Osu dwellers fear losing heritage as govt moves to dualise a historic road segment

Osu indigenes have thrown their weight behind resistance against a government proposal to convert the stretch from Castle Road to Kingdom Books into a dual carriageway. The plan, tied to Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary celebrations, would raze family houses that hold generational memory.

Traditional homes in the area are more than brick and mortar; they are physical links to ancestors whose names still echo in local conversation. For many, tearing them down would erase a living archive of Osu’s cultural DNA, a loss residents say no development can justify.

Officials from the Department of Urban Roads and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly convened a stakeholder forum to hear the community’s misgivings. One elder suggested rerouting the new carriageway so only one side cuts through the neighbourhood, a compromise that would spare most threatened houses.

Though the meeting sought common ground, no consensus emerged. The municipal chief executive affirmed that talks remain open but offered no timeline for revisiting the layout.

Residents left the gathering determined to protect their built heritage, signalling that the dispute will likely linger until designers present a revised, less disruptive scheme.
