Ghana National Fire Service evacuates communities cut off by sudden floods in Hohoe after heavy rains on September 28.

The Ghana National Fire Service has rescued and evacuated dozens of residents stranded by sudden flooding across six communities in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region.

Firefighters from the Hohoe Station, led by DOIII Bismark Hosu-Porbley, swung into action after heavy rains on Monday, September 28 triggered rapid floodwaters that cut off access in Star Filling Station, Picnic, Hohoe Central Zongo, Segbedeme, Kitikpa and Wegbe. Emergency teams moved in quickly as water levels rose unexpectedly, trapping residents in their homes and on local pathways.

The operation came after floodwaters submerged roads and bridges, isolating several communities and disrupting movement. The GNFS confirmed that all affected persons were safely relocated to higher ground. While no lives were reported lost, the incident has left several areas without road access and damaged key infrastructure.

The Service has since issued a public advisory urging residents in flood-prone zones to remain alert during heavy rains. It warned against crossing swollen waterways and staying near drainage channels, stressing that such actions remain life-threatening even after floodwaters recede.
