NRSA Urges MTTD to Tighten Grip on Unregistered Drivers
NRSA DG calls for stricter enforcement of drivers operating outside licensed terminals across Ghana's roads.
The National Road Safety Authority has asked the Motor Traffic and Transport Department to step up checks on commercial drivers who work without being linked to any official transport union or terminal. The appeal came from the agency’s Director-General, Abraham Amaliba, who said these so‑called “wah‑wah” operators undermine self‑regulation within the sector. He made the remarks during a discussion on Joy Prime’s programme about the nation’s road safety challenges on September 30. Amaliba explained that transport unions are best placed to control drivers who drive into recognised terminals and belong to their associations, while the MTTD should take charge of those who ply the streets independently. By splitting the responsibility, he believes the overall safety of the roads can improve. He also stressed that the MTTD must be proactive in monitoring drivers outside the organised structures, ensuring they are held to the same standards as those operating under union supervision. The call comes as Ghana grapples with rising accidents involving informal transport operators, prompting a push for more coordinated enforcement across the country.
