NPP postpones constitutional amendments at delegates conference in Kumasi

NPP puts off key constitutional changes to a future conference to allow proper review of less than 20 proposals including leadership clause.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has delayed plans to amend its constitution during its National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3. Acting National Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey explained that delegates needed more time to examine the proposed changes before voting on them. The party confirmed fewer than 20 amendments are pending, drawing from unfinished business of the January 2026 constitutional conference in Accra and new proposals under review. One contentious proposal seeks to formally recognise the National Chairman as the party’s overall leader, a clause first introduced at the January 31 conference. With the focus shifting to electing new national officers, the amendments will be revisited at a later date. The move aims to ensure thorough deliberation ahead of the upcoming elections. Hawa Koomson recently urged party women to unite behind Vice Presidential candidate Mahamudu Bawumia, reflecting internal dynamics as the NPP finalises its leadership structure ahead of 2028.
