Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia called for peace and unity as NPP delegates convened in Kumasi to elect new national executives ahead of the 2028 elections.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia addressed the New Patriotic Party delegates conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026, urging party members to conduct elections in peace and accept results in good faith. He framed the gathering as a pivotal moment for the party’s future, stating that the election of new national executives would steer the NPP to victory in 2028. The conference, held at the party’s national congress venue in Kumasi, brought together key figures including Acting National Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey, former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and other senior party members. Bawumia praised the Ashanti Region’s historical role in supporting the party during challenging times, thanking Acting National Chairman Buttey for stabilising the party during a difficult period and acknowledging former Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) for his service. He also paid tribute to National Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim and highlighted the contributions of foundational party figures like J.B. Danquah, K.A. Busia, and K.B. Danquah. Bawumia emphasized the need for unity, urging winners to immediately reach out to losing aspirants and affirming that all participants remained vital to the party’s mission. He noted that 47 members had contested for nine national offices, showcasing the party’s depth of leadership talent. The conference concluded with a call to vote peacefully and leave Kumasi as one family, reflecting on lessons learned from grassroots engagement and party restructuring since December 2024. Bawumia cited the NPP’s commitment to reforming party organisation, communication, and policy-making, including the early selection of him as the 2028 presidential candidate and the establishment of policy committees. He criticized the opposition NDC’s unfulfilled promise of a 24-hour economy with a 1-3-3 job structure, stating that Ghanaian youth remained waiting for promised opportunities.
