NPP executives in the diaspora have endorsed a push to remove constitutional restrictions preventing dual citizens from contesting parliamentary elections in Ghana.

NPP diaspora executives have backed calls to amend the 1992 Constitution to allow dual citizens to contest parliamentary elections in Ghana.

The proposal targets Article 94(2), which currently bars individuals with foreign citizenship from seeking parliamentary or ministerial office. NPP UK Chairman Andy Owusu, speaking at a press conference, argued that recognizing dual citizenship since the 1996 Acquitti Bill should now be followed by deeper inclusion. He emphasized that loyalty lies in oath and action, not nationality status.

Diasporans contribute significantly through remittances, investment, expertise, and global networks, Owusu said. The group dismissed claims that holding another passport undermines patriotism, stating that Ghana must tap its diaspora as a national asset. They reiterated the slogan “once a Ghanaian, always a Ghanaian” to support their stance.

The push comes amid renewed debate following the Constitutional Review Committee’s recommendation. If passed, the amendment could reshape political inclusion for millions of Ghanaians abroad.
