Parliament's Agriculture Committee Chairperson, Emmanuel Opoku Mensah, has praised NAFCO's GH₵96.3million profit as critical for Ghana's food sufficiency agenda.

The Agriculture Committee of Parliament has lauded the National Food Co-operative (NAFCO) for turning its financial fortunes around with a GH₵96.3 million profit last year, a reversal from a GH₵20 million debt in previous periods.

Chairman Emmanuel Opoku Mensah said the development reflects successful implementation of policies aimed at stabilising strategic food reserves and supporting farmers across the country's value chains. This financial turnaround, he noted, directly strengthens the nation's capacity to buffer against import dependency during lean seasons.

The profit surge is tied to NAFCO's expanded mandate under the Planting for Food and Jobs policy, where it now procures and distributes subsidised inputs to over 500,000 smallholder farmers nationwide. Rural listeners who rely on these inputs for maize and rice cultivation say the stability has eased procurement pressures.

Looking ahead, NAFCO is expected to channel these gains into restocking grain reserves and expanding outreach programmes in the Northern and Upper regions where food gaps are most acute.

The sector hopes the model can be replicated in other state-linked agro enterprises to deepen Ghana's food sovereignty.
