Former President John Kufuor urges NPP delegates to pick national officers based on proven leadership, not empty talk.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has urged delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to select the party’s next national executives by carefully examining their records, not by empty rhetoric. Speaking in a recorded video shown at the party’s National Delegates Conference, he said the nation’s confidence in the NPP could only be restored through leaders who could unite the party and revive its democratic traditions. He stressed that the party must operate democratically, respecting diverse views while recognising that ultimate sovereignty rests with the people.

Kufuor said the NPP needed a fresh crop of leaders capable of steering Ghana toward prosperity and transformation. His appeal came as the party convened to elect new national officers, including a national chairman and general secretary, who will guide the party into its next phase. The former president also called for unity within the party, urging all members to rally behind the choices made by the delegates.

The conference, which also saw President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo‑Addo urging the newly elected officers to unite the party ahead of the 2028 election, approved 14 constitutional amendments despite earlier calls to defer the exercise. While some observers noted that the amendments could pave the way for the party’s flagbearer to become the party leader, the process proceeded with the delegates’ endorsement.

Kufuor’s message resonated with many attendees who saw the need for a shift from charismatic speeches to substantive assessment of candidates. He argued that the party’s future depended on choosing leaders who could deliver tangible results and reconnect with ordinary Ghanaians.

The event was not without tension; a PNC statement cautioned the NPP against making the flagbearer an automatic party leader, while some NDC delegates left the conference early due to a delayed start. Firefighters also battled a blaze behind the Amasaman China Mall, and Sammy Crabbe announced his withdrawal from the NPP chairmanship race.
