The Ghana Revenue Authority celebrates a landmark legal win as a tribunal upholds its $393 million tax assessment against Tullow Ghana Limited.

The Ghana Revenue Authority has welcomed a decisive arbitral ruling that confirms its $393,091,993.70 tax assessment against Tullow Ghana Limited. The tribunal, set up under the International Chamber of Commerce Rules of Arbitration, dismissed all claims by Tullow that the assessment was improper. It found that the assessment complied with Ghana's petroleum agreements and was not barred by time limits. The decision also confirmed that the GRA acted lawfully in enforcing the tax. The Authority said the judgment reinforced its commitment to applying Ghana's tax laws consistently, no matter the size or sector of the taxpayer. It highlighted that all citizens and businesses must meet their tax obligations as part of nation-building. The GRA praised the coordinated legal effort involving the Office of the Attorney-General, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Finance, and external counsel Foley Hoag LLP. It also acknowledged the diligence of its own officers and technical teams in defending the assessment. The Authority reiterated that strong institutions and fair tax administration are essential for economic stability and investor confidence. It called the outcome a vindication of Ghana's tax system and a step toward consistent enforcement across the petroleum sector.
