Ghana loses 4-2 to The Gambia at Accra Sports Stadium after leading twice, sparking outrage over football administration

Ghana's Black Stars suffered a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, squandering a two-goal lead in front of a home crowd. Ernest Nuamah opened the scoring for Ghana, followed by Felix Afena-Gyan's free-kick goal, which drew a previously sparse audience into celebration. However, the team collapsed after halftime, with Muhammed Badamosi converting a penalty, Omar Colley equalising before the break, and Ebrima Colley sealing the win for The Gambia. The loss marks a historic embarrassment, as The Gambia, a nation of under three million people, had never previously faced Ghana in a competitive match. This defeat follows Ghana's earlier 2-0 loss to Côte d'Ivoire in Bouaké, underscoring a pattern of poor performances in qualifiers. The Black Stars have won only once in twelve matches under the current administration, with Otto Addo sacked after five straight defeats and his successor managing just one win from six games before The Gambia fixture. The GFA leadership, including President Kurt Okraku, has faced criticism for seven years of inaction despite repeated calls for investment in youth development, coach education, and infrastructure. The coach has repeatedly requested basic resources like proper pitches and communication channels, while the administration has shrugged off mounting failures. Ghana's failure to qualify for the last Africa Cup of Nations and successive group-stage exits have further eroded confidence, with talent alone no longer masking systemic issues. The government has been urged to dissolve the GFA and install a caretaker body to address the crisis, but FIFA's rules complicate such intervention. A suspension would disrupt all Ghanaian football, yet continued underperformance risks missing the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, compounding the damage of the current leadership.
