GPRTU warns over non-member vehicles threatening road safety enforcement
GPRTU says many vehicles operating on Ghana’s roads are outside its oversight, making it hard to enforce safety standards.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has highlighted a growing safety concern caused by commercial vehicles that are not part of its membership. According to Mr Eric Lantey Lamptey, the Union’s Communications Team Lead, only vehicles registered with GPRTU are subject to its regular inspections, test drives, and document checks. Stations under the Union are equipped to monitor and enforce roadworthiness standards, including strict rules like refusing vehicles with broken lights. However, Mr Lamptey noted that a significant number of commercial vehicles on Ghana’s roads remain outside this system, leaving a critical gap in enforcement.
