GPRTU warns that drivers charging above new transport fares risk fines or up to one month in jail starting after sensitization week.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union has issued a firm directive to its members to adhere strictly to the recently approved 8% transport fare increase. Any driver caught overcharging passengers will face disciplinary measures including fines or short-term imprisonment. Deputy Public Relations Officer Samuel Amoah emphasized this during a radio interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem program. He stated that the union is currently in a dedicated sensitisation phase to educate drivers before enforcement commences. This warning follows growing concerns about operators ignoring regulated rates across lorry stations throughout the country. The new Legislative Instrument governing transport fares is now active and Grantie Amoah confirmed that the union will collaborate with state authorities to ensure compliance. Repeat offenders may face legal processes without delay. The union stressed that this action is necessary to restore public trust in commuting costs. Daily passengers continue to report unfair charges at informal terminals and major stations. With the enforcement framework now operational the GPRTU expects greater price transparency across the transport sector.
