Govt Pledges Immediate Payment to Strike Teachers After Dispute Resolution
Finance and education officials confirm payment process to resume once disputed data is harmonized, schools prepare to reopen
The government has pledged to settle all outstanding payments to striking teachers once the current data discrepancies are corrected. Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu confirmed President Nana Akufo-Addo has been briefed and ordered immediate action to bring educators back to classrooms across Ghana.
The assurance came during a Joy News interview where Ofosu explained Ghana Statistical Service figures reveal mismatches between records held by the Finance Ministry and Controller and Accountant-General's Department regarding teachers' promotions and arrears. Ongoing negotiations aim to close this information gap swiftly, he stated, emphasizing the administration understands educators cannot remain idle indefinitely.
With school terms approaching, the settlement would restore learning for thousands of students affected by weeks of disruption. Teacher unions initiated the strike citing unpaid promotional increments despite verified entitlements. The resolution depends solely on aligning administrative records to process legitimate claims without delay.
Once harmonization completes, back payments will be released immediately according to Ofosu. This step ensures disrupted academic calendars can return to normal operation across all public institutions nationwide very shortly thereafter.
