Government distances itself from alleged MP arrest incident
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has dismissed claims that EOCO officers tried to kidnap MP Baffour Awuah, describing the officer as lawfully executing duties.
The government has refuted allegations that an Economic and Organised Crime Office officer attempted to kidnap Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
During a broadcast on Joy News' PM Express, spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu clarified that the officer captured in the distressing footage was carrying out a lawful arrest. He emphasized that the officer demonstrated professionalism and restraint while confronting the MP.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu detailed that the EOCO official belonged to a surveillance unit with seventeen years of service. He explained that the tactical team had been instructed to assess the situation before deciding on force, noting that their intervention could have intensified tensions.
While acknowledging room for improved strategy, the spokesperson asserted that security agencies operate independently without presidential approval for arrests. He urged the public to view the incident through the lens of legal protocol rather than political implication.
ECOCO confirmed that the officer acted under official instruction and recognized his credentials as a seasoned law enforcement professional.
The government maintains that the episode reflects proper procedure execution rather than misconduct. It reiterates confidence in agencies to handle arrests according to established protocols regardless of political affiliations.
