Ghana makes history with Dr. Adusu's election to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea

Accra celebrated a milestone when Dr. Adusa became the first African woman appointed to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Her six-year term began in January 2026. The election filled a vacant post at the tribunal based in Hamburg, Germany.

Dr. Adusa brings decades of legal expertise to the tribunal's work on maritime disputes. Her appointment reflects progress toward gender equality in Ghana's legal profession. She joins a small group of women serving on international courts.

The tribunal handles cases involving ocean boundaries, shipping conflicts, and maritime law. Dr. Adusa's term will last until 2035. Her presence strengthens Africa's voice in global legal matters.

Public celebration marked her swearing-in ceremony. Ghanaians viewed this as validation of local talent on the world stage.
