GES clears 35,000 of 60,000 teacher promotion documents

GES spokesperson Daniel Fenyi says 35,000 of 60,000 teacher promotion files have been processed to end years of stagnation.
The Ghana Education Service is finally moving to clear a backlog of teacher promotion documents that has lingered for years. Public Relations Officer Daniel Fenyi told Starr FM that about 35,000 of the 60,000 files tied to promised 2024 promotions have now been processed. Affected teachers had waited four to five years on the same rank after the previous administration left their cases unfinished. When the current government took office it inherited the stalled process and, after talks with unions, decided to restart the examinations. The promotion tests were held in December and results came out in May and June. Teachers were told their new ranks would show up in August salary payments. But a chain of delays at the Controller, Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, the Ministry of Education and the unions pushed the payments back. Many teachers received only their old salaries last month, prompting the unions to call a strike. Fenyi said GES is now racing to finish the remaining paperwork before the Ministry of Education’s deadline. The backlog began when earlier promotions never materialised, leaving thousands of educators stuck in limbo. Their frustration finally sparked industrial action last month.
