Ambassador Frederik Landshöft commended Ghana’s peaceful coexistence of diverse identities during a German Unity Day event in Accra.

German Ambassador to Ghana Frederik Landshöft praised Ghana’s ability to maintain social cohesion amid religious, cultural and political diversity at a reception marking German Unity Day 2026. Speaking at the German Residence in Accra, he highlighted the country’s capacity to harmoniously accommodate varied identities as a lesson for Germany and Europe.

The Ambassador reflected on Germany’s reunification following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, emphasizing that unity is an ongoing process rather than a final achievement. He noted current global challenges including war in Europe, technological shifts and ecological transformations that risk deepening societal divisions.

Landshöft stated that Ghana’s peaceful coexistence of multiple religious traditions and respect for both traditional authorities and democratic governance stood out during his first year in the country. He described this balance as something worth celebrating on German Unity Day, while cautioning against romanticising the nation’s achievements.

The Diplomat underscored the natural partnership between Ghana and Germany, citing shared democratic values and middle-power status. He called for a new cooperation model based on mutual interests rather than donor-recipient dynamics, stressing that both nations have much to contribute to each other.

Landshöft outlined the Team Germany approach, which coordinates efforts across security, economic development, skills training and climate action. This includes German support for Ghanaian security institutions, technical cooperation through GIZ and KfW, and vocational education partnerships involving over 20 German institutions.

He highlighted projects like Northshore Apparel in Savelugu, which has created over 2,000 jobs through German investment and skills training. The Ambassador also pointed to opportunities in the pharmaceutical sector and expanded German-language education through new centres in Takoradi.

Addressing historical ties, Landshöft acknowledged Germany’s colonial past in areas now part of Ghana, stating that an equal partnership requires honest engagement with history. He affirmed that Ghana and Germany are natural partners in a world marked by uncertainty, with cooperation focused on shared value creation and equitable development.
