GACL MD sues over defamatory statements linking her to drug trafficking
Ghana Airport Company Limited Managing Director Benita Ongoah has filed a defamation suit demanding retraction and apology from 3News.
The Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), Benita Ongoah, has taken legal action against Multimedia Ghana Limited, publishers of 3News, over recent allegations that linked her to drug trafficking and abuse of office.
The lawsuit filed on Monday seeks an unconditional retraction, a public apology without conditions and a formal undertaking that the media outlet will not repeat the claims. The court documents also ask for general damages, legal costs and any other relief the court deems appropriate.
This case stems from a comment aired by the station which suggested that Madam Ongoah had used her office to unlawfully influence procurement processes for a narcotic trafficking case. The allegation was made in relation to her involvement in the GAACL scandal where a container belonging to her company was reportedly used to hide cocaine weighing 11.5kg.
Madam Ongoah's legal team says the publication has caused reputational damage and misuse of her office. The court will determine whether the statements constitute defamation and what remedies are appropriate.
No specific hearing date has been announced by the court so far.
