NADMO reports 5,336 displaced residents across ten communities after last Monday's floods in Hohoe Municipality.

The waters that submerged low-lying areas of Hohoe last Monday have finally receded, but the humanitarian crisis deepens. The National Disaster Management Organisation confirmed yesterday that approximately 5,336 persons have been rendered homeless across ten affected communities within the municipality. Many families seek shelter in temporary sites while losing personal belongings and livelihood assets.

From the perspective of ordinary Hohoe residents, this is not merely a weather event but a recurring threat that erodes hard-won stability. The floods come on the heels of similar devastation just two years ago, when floods along the Afram River displaced over 2,000 people and prompted promises of infrastructure upgrades that remain unimplemented.

Immediate relief efforts led by NADMO are underway, yet displaced citizens face mounting challenges. With markets and roads still partly submerged, daily commutes have become arduous, and small traders are unable to restock inventories. The situation underscores the urgent need for long-term flood mitigation in the Volta Region capital.

Though the emergency phase is easing, officials say support will continue for those still without shelter. Temporary accommodation centres remain open, but questions persist about timelines for reconstruction and compensation for affected property owners.
