The Daily Graphic celebrates its 76th anniversary amid reflections on its revolutionary 1950 debut and enduring impact on Ghanaian journalism.

The Daily Graphic turns 76 today, but its legacy stretches back to October 2, 1950, a date many Ghanaians now consider pivotal in media history. That day marked the launch of a technologically advanced newspaper production method in the Gold Coast, setting a new standard for the industry.

The publication broke from tradition by filling its pages with crisp news reports, each signed by living journalists rather than the colonial elite. Pioneers like S.N. Addo, Anthony Mensah, Moses Danquah, Bankole Timothy, Carl Mutt (Henry Ofori), and Regina Addae brought fresh perspectives, blending education and entertainment through sharp writing and widespread use of photographs.

At a time when most local papers were stodgy broadsheets dominated by opinion, the Graphic stood out with its pictorial tabloid style, sports section, and feature articles that resonated across society. Its arrival sparked tension, particularly from rival papers like The Spectator, led by Dr. Nanka Bruce, who petitioned the Joint Provincial Council of Chiefs in Dodowa to suppress it.

The chiefs rejected the petition but proposed a compromise: appointing Martin Therson-Cofie, Editor of the Ashanti Times and a moderate figure under Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, as the new editor. This move eased colonial concerns while preserving local influence. The Graphic’s rise came amid national unrest, including the 1948 Osu shootings that had galvanized political awakening.

Today, the Daily Graphic continues to shape public discourse, with recent coverage highlighting national issues from healthcare expansion to drug trafficking. As it celebrates 76 years, the paper remains a cornerstone of Ghanaian media, reflecting both historical resilience and ongoing innovation in public storytelling.
