Carlos Queiroz Resigns as Black Stars Coach

The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician quit after losses to Ivory Coast and The Gambia in AFCON qualifiers.
Carlos Queiroz has resigned as Ghana Black Stars coach, confirming he left the role of his own volition rather than being dismissed.
The 73-year-old Portuguese coach stepped down after two opening defeats in Group C of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Ghana lost 2-0 to Ivory Coast in Bouake before slipping to a 4-2 defeat at home to The Gambia, a result that dropped them to the bottom of the group.
Queiroz had taken charge in April on a short-term contract initially meant for the 2026 World Cup, but the GFA extended his stay to oversee the AFCON qualifiers. He had previously led Ghana to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time since 2010, yet the team struggled upon returning to competitive fixtures.
Following the loss to The Gambia, a senior source disclosed that Queiroz apologised to the playing body and accepted responsibility for the outcomes. He later informed the Ghana Football Association of his intention to resign, a move confirmed by Adom Online.
The departure will see Queiroz leave alongside his entire technical staff, including an assistant coach, nutritionist, conditioning specialist, goalkeeping coach, video analyst and kit manager. His tenure comprised seven matches with a record of one win, two draws and four defeats.
The GFA now faces the task of appointing a successor before the Black Stars reconvene in November for crucial back-to-back qualifiers against Somalia. These matches represent a pivotal opportunity to arrest the team's slump and rekindle hopes of securing a spot at the 2027 tournament.
Queiroz's exit marks the end of a turbulent spell that began with high expectations but unraveled quickly under the weight of poor results and mounting pressure.
