AMA orders 24 hour evacuation of Avenor fire-affected site

Accra Mayor Michael Allotey has given squatters in Avenor 24 hours to leave the fire-damaged area permanently, citing safety risks and unauthorised occupancy. He warned against resettlement after the evacuation and urged responsible reporting.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has given squatters in the Avenor Industrial Area 24 hours to vacate the site after a recent fire outbreak. Accra Mayor Michael Allotey said the area remains unsafe and the Assembly would not permit any return or resettlement. He explained that many occupants had been served notices earlier but chose to stay despite warnings. The Mayor specifically referenced unauthorised structures as increasing risks during the fire incident. While confirming one death was reported, he stated he was still gathering full details about the incident. Mr Allotey also called on journalists to stop platforming illegal occupants making resettlement demands. He argued that such coverage encourages improper claims after emergencies. The directive targets those living in the fire-affected zones without legal permission. Ordinary residents in the area now face immediate displacement pressures. The Mayor stressed that public safety overrides individual grievances in this matter. Evacuation efforts will continue until every unauthorised occupant leaves the premises. The Assembly will not entertain any requests to return to the evacuated zones.
