Tema native petitions EOCO over GH¢889,000 land royalty payment

Richster Nii Amarh Amarfio of Tema petitions EOCO to investigate GH¢889,000 payment by Sonite Ghana Limited to individuals claiming to represent Tema Newtown's traditional and youth groups.
A Tema native has formally petitioned the Economic and Organized Crime Office to investigate a GH¢889,000 payment made by Sonite Ghana Limited to four individuals who claimed authority to speak for Tema Newtown's traditional leadership, youth factions and assembly members.
Richster Nii Amarh Amarfio, through his legal team, seeks clarity on the legitimacy of the authority claimed by Abraham Adjei, T‑Youth President; Joseph B. Mensah, Vice President; Sumaila Adjetey Aggaby, Assembly Member; and Mohammed Eliasu, Organizer. The petition questions how Sonite Ghana Limited authorized these payments and why the names of revered community figures were attached to a financial demand.
The petition, dated September 11, 2026, details a receipt showing the four men received the sum equivalent to roughly US$70,000 on behalf of Tema Newtown residents. Mr Amarfio demands EOCO determine who instigated the demand, the stated purpose of the funds and whether any coercion, fraud or unlawful pressure influenced the transaction.
Investigators are asked to scrutinize whether any unlawful conduct preceded the payment, assess possible duress or intimidation tactics, and evaluate the Tema Traditional Council's potential awareness or involvement. The case raises wider concerns about the exploitation of community identities for financial gain and the need for transparent accountability in land-related matters affecting ordinary Ghanaians in urban communities like Tema.
