Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu says negotiations with teacher unions will begin on Tuesday, October 6, to address expired conditions of service and other outstanding issues.

The government will reconvene with the three striking teacher unions – the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre‑Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) – on Tuesday, October 6, at the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) office.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced the date after the FWSC chief executive formally invited the union leaders to resume talks. The minister disclosed the invitation on Friday, October 2, following a meeting between government representatives and the unions that was called to address the nationwide industrial action that started on September 25, 2026.

The unions are seeking resolution of several unresolved matters, including promotion arrears, a 20 per cent deprived‑area allowance and the implementation of their expired collective agreement. According to the minister, the second agenda item on the table concerns a manifesto pledge of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, which the unions expect to be honoured during the negotiations.

Haruna Iddrisu expressed confidence that the discussions would be wrapped up within a week, stating that the government would engage the unions in the same spirit used for other sectoral negotiations across the country. He added that the outcome would help restore normal academic activities in public schools.

The strike, now in its second week, has kept classrooms empty in many public schools, affecting thousands of students preparing for upcoming examinations. Parents and school administrators have voiced concern over the prolonged disruption, urging both parties to expedite the process.

No formal court hearings, parliamentary sessions or scheduled public events are attached to this development, so the event field remains null.

The next step hinges on the outcome of the October 6 meeting, after which the parties have indicated they will reconvene if further clarification is needed.
