SSNIT clears encroached beachfront in Labadi to safeguard national hospitality assets and restore public access to the beach.

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has defended the demolition of unauthorized structures along the Labadi Beach front, stating the action was necessary to protect investments belonging to Ghanaian workers and pensioners.

In a media release issued on October 2, 2026, SSNIT announced it had requested the intervention of the National Security Council Secretariat to address ongoing unlawful occupation and encroachment on the beachfront adjacent to the Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel. These two hotels, SSNIT emphasized, are key components of its investment portfolio and represent significant national hospitality and tourism assets.

SSNIT reiterated that it holds a fiduciary duty to safeguard these assets, preserve their value, and ensure they continue generating sustainable returns for over two million contributors to the Basic National Social Security Scheme. The Trust described the properties as belonging to Ghanaian workers and retirees, making their protection a matter of national importance.

The organization identified eight critical risks posed by the encroachment, including threats to guest and staff safety, unauthorized access to operational zones, fire hazards, public health concerns, damage to coastal ecosystems, reputational harm to Ghana’s tourism sector, loss of revenue from disrupted hotel operations, and the risk of further expansion that could complicate recovery efforts.

According to SSNIT, the request for National Security support was aimed at ensuring the protection of assets entrusted to it by workers. The recent operation, carried out by National Security operatives, involved the removal of makeshift structures along the beachfront in front of the two hotels. While some Ghanaians have voiced support for the exercise, others have expressed concern over the impact on informal livelihoods.

SSNIT clarified that the operation does not close the beach to the public but is part of a broader restoration initiative. The Trust assured that the beach will be cleaned, restored to a safe and desirable condition, and remain accessible for public enjoyment.

The Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel are among SSNIT’s most prominent hospitality investments, developed to serve both national development goals and financial returns for pensioners.

In recent years, the Labadi beachfront has experienced increasing encroachment by temporary structures, traders, and individuals described as land guards, prompting complaints from hotel management and tourists about security, sanitation, and loss of private beach access.
